Hi Peeps ,

Linux/Ubuntu is not just for geeks but also for making
serious money in the market. Here are some of the tools I found in case some
of us here would like to become a daytrader.

FOSS
- QTStalker - a charting and technical analysis tool. Its in the repos so
just do apt-get install and you are set.

Non FOSS
- VMWare - sad to say but most serious trading platforms come only for win.
So for some software , vmware is a must.
- Zeroline Trader - This trading software is available for win/lin/mac ...
and has package for Ubuntu specifically.

Currently , I am using two web platforms. POEMS and Optionsxpress. So far ,
I have no problem with both their web-based trading tools. If I find a much
better tool , I will update you guys. Or if you know any , pls share with
us. Cheers!

regards
Billy

You could always use Virtualbox OSE which is full of open source
goodness, plus seamless mode is really neat.

Thanks Nick

QTstalker is no use for day trading.
It takes data from public sources such as Yahoo, so it'll be 20 min
delay unless you are lucky member of http://www.opentick.com/. It
can't display 1 min charts either.
BTW, the code of QTstalker is a bit messy because it doesn't use
proper libraries, for example, for xml parsing. I've fixed and
committed to the upstream (not released yet) few bugs, so make sure
you apply it
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2010375&group_id=25632&atid=384885
http://bugs.gentoo.org/218904

I would also suggest to use it in combination with
http://www.freestockcharts.com/ (requires www-plugins/moonlight :( )
or your broker's website (mostly in Java).

Cheers,
Anton

Thanks for the info. I am using QuoteTracker now. Windows only but its
real-time using optionsxpress streaming for US markets with almost all the
TA/charts I could possibily use. And it only costs US7/mth with subscription
and actually free without sub but with ad and some limitations. As for
web-based , they are slow and opentick is no longer available.

"However, we are sad to say that the time has come for us to close the doors
for opentick. However, this isn't goodbye. In fact, it's a new beginning. We
will be introducing a fresh service with all the bells and whistles we've
been slaving on over the course of the last year under a new name, a new
website and a new level of service. Check back here in the near future for
more information about the forthcoming new company and service. Of course
amongst all these changes, there are some things that will remain the same -
we still aim to provide a reliable free market data service, with an open
architecture for a wide range of software platform support."\
-opentick.com

Too bad.

regards
Billy
